Exclusive: court slams breaks on implementation of social health insurance fund act

The High Court has stopped the government from implementing newly launched Social Health Fund Act after a petition was filed challenging sections of the Act as being unconstitutional. The Act, which is set to replace the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) will remain frozen until February next year after High Court judge Chacha Mwita certified the case as urgent. Escobar Kenya Ltd Involvement In Sh34M NHIF Fraud Unearthed

The Assets Recovery Agency has moved to court seeking orders to freeze the bank accounts of a man suspected to be involved in the Sh 34,441,587.35 Kenyatta National Hospital scam. Eric Nguku Mbiu who is the director of Escobar Kenya Limited is suspected to be part of a syndicate involved in a money laundering scheme which fraudulently diverted the above funds from KNH. The funds were intended for repayment of KNH staff loan. According to the investigating officer Kipkurui Serem, Mbiu’s company was registered in 2014 and has a bank account at the National Bank of Kenya which holds Sh 14,280,345.80. KMPDC Suspends All Eight Hospitals Implicated In NHIF Scandal

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has suspended all eight medical facilities identified by Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha Wafula as having allegedly siphoned funds from the National Health and Insurance Fund (NHIF). This follows an exposé that revealed that a number of private hospitals are part of an elaborate syndicate working with unscrupulous NHIF staff to rob unsuspecting citizens and government of the healthcare funds.
