Senator Orwoba Returns To Senate Amid Sexual Allegations Probe

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has revoked the suspension of nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from Parliament following her acquisition of conservatory orders that contested her suspension.

In his ruling on Tuesday, Speaker Kingi noted that the House would “comply with the court’s order,” even though he expressed disappointment regarding the court’s decision on the matter.

“We reserve our right to vigorously defend our position in court to demonstrate that the Senate accorded the Senator due process,” Speaker Kingi ruled.

Senator Orwoba, who has been at the center of controversy, was suspended from participating in House plenary sessions on September 20, 2023, by the House Powers and Privileges Committee, chaired by Speaker Kingi.

The suspension followed her making serious allegations of a sexual nature against some of her colleagues and the House Clerk, Jeremiah Nyegenye.

The suspension for six months was later endorsed by the Committee of the Whole House and also prevented Senator Orwoba from visiting the precincts of Parliament sessions until February 2024.

While suspended, Senator Orwoba was also prohibited from receiving her usual benefits and allowances.

The High Court in Machakos, which issued the conservatory orders to Senator Orwoba, is on October 25, 2023, scheduled to provide further directions on the case.
